Radiation Oncology opened at the new Sherman Hospital in January of 2010 with a Varian iX Linear Accelerator. This was a new opportunity to offer Radiation services to patients at Sherman Hospital and the surrounding communities. Over the past six years the program has grown tremendously. We have had the ability to treat most cancers, right here at Sherman, with the exception of radiotherapy treatments, which are currently referred tooutside facilities.

In 2014, the decision was made to invest in Varian TrueBeam technology. TrueBeam technology from Varian Medical Systems is a real game-changer and expands radiotherapy treatment options for even the most challenging cancer cases in the lung, breast, head and neck, abdomen, liver and other regions. This technology delivers fast, accurate image guided treatments in just a few minutes a day. The imaging tools used by TrueBeam allow clinicians to “see” the tumor just prior to and during the treatment process. This makes it possible to target tumors in submillimeter accuracy. As well it offers special imaging and delivery tools that establish the magnitude of motion, monitor any changes and then compensate for motion during treatment.

Patient experience has been the foundation for the addition and renovations that will take place in Radiation Oncology in 2016. A new garden vault will be contracted to house the Varian TrueBeam. The new vault with come with a garden view to provide an environment of healing and relaxation, for our patients, through natural light and plants.

The current vault will be transformed into an HDR (High Dose Rate) Brachytherapy Suite, allowing our patients to stay right here at Sherman hospital for all their radiation needs. We look forward to transforming our patient’s experience, with shorter treatment times and extreme accuracy in a healing environment.
